It is simply into the become so it starts to break apart, although slap-right up finale rescues it on ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero high challenge inside the way of life off its incredibly unattractive term.” [ 8 ]

The newest film’s author and you may director, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess online game, to own mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) has worked within casino and dated a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic script, brand new cast’s suavely managed body gestures from love and you will possibility, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will stylishly cocky photos (as well as his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet detail by detail spectacle a low profile classic of your genre.” [ 10 ]

Ace performances from the Penis Powell, since a playing domestic overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, as a police inspector, together with within the score . As the patch uses a familiar trend, the latest characterizations try fresh plus the activities sufficient so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and you may topical, steering clear of the psychological, phoney touch. Strange digital camera bases come along on occasion so you’re able to escalate appeal and you can briefly arrest the eye. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing since manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand spanking new publisher and you can associate producer, together with helps with making this a soft development.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly a matter of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces smartly when you’re a large cast out of stars and actresses render him vintage support. Evelyn Keyes performs the good nothing woman whom brings forth this new best in him and you will Ellen Received is the smooth and slinky vixen whom gets him for the jams. Thomas Gomez is oily due to the fact villain and Lee J. Cobb does an alternative ready tour because an exhausted police inspector which in the end shuts the case. Significant amounts of ingesting and you may smoking is performed because of the all the alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
